An editorial about interstate moving by the owner of Fast Movers:

So why is it that so many people have negative impressions of moving companies? Why are there stories on the news about customers' goods being “held hostage” or excessive “hidden” charges being added on at the last minute? I find it disgusting that these kinds of practices exist; but I am not sure that every industry is devoid of its fair share of crooks.

So what can a person do to prevent being “ripped off”? Easy. Do your homework. Find out about the company. Insist on talking to previous customers and ask for a list of references. Ask to see their customer agreement(s) and/or any paperwork that you would be signing regarding your move. Find out how large the company is.

Back to long distance moving. There are three ways that Fast Movers can figure the estimate for your out of state move. First is a Non-Binding estimate. This means the charges for the move are based on the weight of your household goods to be moved. If the estimate is for 5000 pounds and it turns out they weigh 7000 pounds, you'll pay more. If it is 4000 pounds, you pay less. Second: Guaranteed Price . This is just what is says. The price you see is the price you get. No funny business. Third is the Customer Benefit . If the estimate for your move is 5000 pounds and $2340, your final bill will not exceed $2340, even if the weight is actually more than 5000 pounds. If the weight is less than 5000 pounds then the bill will be reduced for your benefit.

There are two caveats to the above situations. First: It is impossible for the estimator to determine if the truck and trailer can physically fit on the street at your destination address. If the driver cannot get the truck and trailer to your new home there may be a shuttle charge added to load your goods onto a smaller truck to get them to your home. Second, the Guaranteed Price and Customer Benefit scenarios only apply to the goods noted on the estimators' sheets. If your neighbor gives you a fridge to take with you on your move and the weight of the fridge throws off your estimated weight (because it wasn't included originally), then plan on paying a little bit more.

Pretty straightforward isn't it? When you move with a well known reputable company, surprises should be left to a minimum.
